“Scrumpy paddled and splashed with her front legs, barking out, “Sorry, sorry!” as her paws clobbered kids and pushed them under, her claws accidentally leaving marks on their bare skin. She started circling back toward the shore.

Beans yelled, “Save a kid, Scrumpy! Save one! Now’s your chance!”

Scrumpy’s eyes rolled and showed the whites, but she whimpered and paddled back into the center of the kids, her jaw opening wide, her big teeth aiming for the long ponytail of a girl. She saw him coming and screamed, trying to swim away with all the strength in her skinny arms.”
